TOP-2 Enemies of a Startup CEO when it comes to Engineering.
If you’re a technology startup CEO without an engineering background, there are two big challenges you’re likely to face.
Enemy #1: Lack of Trust (AKA Micromanagement)
In the early stage, your engineering team might make up over 50% of your company. You’ve hired a CTO to lead them, but there’s always that little voice in your head saying, “They could be doing more.” As Brian May sang: “Can’t fight this feeling.”
But I am firmly convinced — if you’ve hired someone to lead, give them the space and time to do just that. Let them take risks and even fail if that’s what it takes to succeed. Avoid public criticism, steer clear of gossip, and focus on the big picture, not the small mistakes. Remember, you chose this person for a reason. Now, it’s time to trust your decision.
Enemy #2: Too Much Trust (AKA Lack of Awareness)
Surprised? 😁 Yeah, this one is the flip side of the first. As Brian May also sang, “Too much love will kill you.” And this is also true for the relations between the startup CEO and the engineering department.
Startup CEOs and CTOs need to think strategically and critically, always pushing for better team performance and bigger results. A second opinion is crucial, so don’t leave your CTO alone. Be the sparring partner who’s always there to listen and offer advice.
But always remember about the Enemy #1.
Unfortunately, Brian May didn’t give us an easy formula for balancing these two, but finding that middle ground is the key.
